Aarush, a student in India, took courses in computer science and data science (Introduction to Computer Science and Programming Using Python and Introduction to Computational Thinking and Data Science from MITx and CS50 courses from HarvardX) to enhance his skill set and prepare for applying to MIT. Learn more about Aarush’s goals and his experience of learning online as a blind student.
How was your experience learning online?
It was an amazing experience. For a blind student learning online tends to be a little challenging, as they struggle somewhere due to accessibility issues, but for me working on the edX platform was very joyful and smooth. It kept my passion alive. I am forever thankful to the edX staff for always being so supportive, cooperative, and responsive, although it has already been very accessible for a blind user using a screen reader like me.
How has your learning impacted your career, life, or community?
skillacademy has taught me so much, much more than just technical knowledge. It has taught me how to face a challenge and to not rest until you achieve victory, how to fight when the odds are against you, and how to focus and put everything aside and keep my eye on that one goal that I’ve been aiming for and achieve it. I’ve learned how to manage my time in an efficient and strict way, how to drop any boundaries and get rid of limitations to what I could achieve and surprise myself. I’ve felt the joy of overcoming a challenge, which by far is one of the best feelings I’ve ever felt in my life. I also learned the qualities needed to be the part of a community—to be an asset and help people and use the knowledge you gain not just for yourself, but also to help others and be a part in their learning process.
How do you plan to use your learning in the future? What’s next for you?
I think I’m very fortunate to have connected to edX and can’t be grateful enough to it for all the growth it’s caused me until now. I will continue to do more and more courses, which will take me a step closer to my aim of studying abroad at attending MIT and boost my application, as well as continue to provide more knowledge and develop skills. Most importantly, I will try the best I can to spread the love of learning!
What advice would you give new edX students?
The idea is to not give up and keep moving forward. It may and probably will seem very difficult at the start, coping up and keeping up, but once you’re used to it, it will not only train and develop one’s character, it will teach useful skills that anybody can use in their lives.
